Freja Beha Erichsen
Freja, born in Roskilde, Denmark, exploded onto the fashion scene soon after being discovered on the streets of her hometown, Copenhagan, Denmark. Despite having no prior modeling experience, Freja was a natural in front of the camera. Her unique beauty and easy nature made her a joy for photographers to work with.
Freja’s career reached new heights during the Fall/Winter 2005 campaign season. Erichsen made her debut as a model in 2005 at the fall Paris and Milan shows of Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu (which she opened).
She continues to walk the runways of New York, Paris, Milan and also London, both in the Ready-to-wear and Haute Couture seasons.
Freja emerged as the year’s break-out star and appeared in three major advertisements campaigns, Balenciaga, photographed by David Sims; Jil Sander, also by David Sims, and TSE, photographed by Carter Smith. Since then, Freja has appeared in advertisements for Gucci, Chanel, Hugo Boss, Chloe, Gap, Calvin Klein, Balmain, Balenciaga, Gianfranco Ferre, and Pringle.
Freja is also the face of Calvin Klein’s perfume, CK In 2 U, and Gucci’s perfume Gucci. She can be seen in the Fall/Winter 2008 advertisements for Emporio Armani.
In 2008, casting agent James Scully, said of Erichsen: “ The queen of cool. Probably one of the most-requested models of all my clients. She is the perfect old-school clothes-hanger with a little eighties androgyny thrown in.”
In her breakout runway season, Freja walked a total of 64 shows, 12 of which she opened, 5 of which she closed. She continues to appear on the runway today and has walked for designers such as, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Christian Lacroix, Dolce & Gabbana, Givency, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Zac Posen.
Influential magazine editors took notice as well. She has appeared in editorials for many fashion magazines, including the American, French, Italian, German, British, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian editions of Vogue, Interview Magazine, W Magazine, American and Russian Harper’s Bazaar, French and Korean Numéro, i-D, V and Purple.
She has also appeared on the covers of: British Vogue, Vogue Italia, Purple, Vogue Paris, French and Korean Numéro, i-D, V, W Magazine and the Chinese, Portuguese, South Korean and Japanese editions of Vogue.
Freja remains a favorite among the fashion elite and is consistently rated as one of the industry’s top models.
Freja Erichsen is one of the faces of the fragrance Gucci by Gucci along side Natasha Poly and Raquel Zimmermann, and starred in the television advertisement directed by David Lynch. She was also the face of the Calvin Klein fragrance IN2U. In 2011, she became the face of the fragrance Valentina by Valentino.
As of July 2011 she is ranked second on the Top 50 Models Women List by models.com, along with Natasha Poly. Vogue Paris declared her one of the top 30 models of the 2000s. She could be regarded as the current muse of Karl Lagerfeld.
Erichsen is featured in the 2011 edition of the Pirelli Calendar, photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. Erichsen is part of history, in what marks the magazine’s first multi-cover in the publication’s 95-years, landing one of the three May Vogue UK covers in celebration of the most anticipated wedding of the year – the Royal wedding.
Freja Erichsen, as of 2012 you can see her in the CHANEL campaigns with male model Baptiste Giabiconi, both muses of Karl Lagerfeld.
Erichsen was educated at Frederiksberg Gymnasium (high school). She is good friends with fellow models Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Irina Lazareanu, Christian Brylle, Lily Donaldson, Karmen Pedaru and Agyness Deyn. She enjoys listening to the music of PJ Harvey, the Danish group Kira and the Kindred Spirits, Janis Joplin and Jeff Buckley. And as last word has it, Freja Beha Erichsen is currently living in New York City, capital city for fashion.
