Chanel’s Women Rule Rule the Runway

PARIS–  When Women, ruled the runway! As if long legs and bold pops of color peeking out from sexy business skirts and professional work ensembles isn’t enough of a “Women rule the world” sort of fashion statement, Chanel powerhouse designer Karl Lagerfeld decided to take his Spring  couture collection show 100 steps further:

In a final march down a Paris runway at Fashion Week in September, Lagerfeld’s top models, including Gisele Bundchen, Georgia May Jagger and Joan Smalls chanted for their rights as women and held up signs that said things like, “Ladies First”, and “Men Should Get Pregnant Too”. It was a staged protest, fashioned by Lagerfeld himself, to promote his new designs that appeared to be feminist-inspired.

Even Kardashian sister Kendall Jenner was a part of the crew, waving a “Women’s Rights Are More Than Alright” banner, as she followed leader of the pack Cara Delevingne, who buzzed words of feminism through her white megaphone.

It was loud. It was something different. And it was bold. But it is uncertain whether Lagerfeld meant to send a feminist message through this “protest” or if he was just being an artist with soaring creativity. Regardless of the true meaning, the show, even days later, is getting noticed. The “faux-test”, as I’d like to call it, has caused an outpour of comments on social media.

Lagerfeld may have earned himself more than a few harsh critics, but there are other Instagram users are that are calling him a genius, and are supportive of his out-of-the-box way of doing things.

The Guardian suggests that the protest was a joke– that it is not likely that Lagerfeld is advocating feminism as a fashion issue. The news site pointed out a quote of Lagerfeld’s, when he said, “Everything I say is a joke. I myself am a joke.”

Perhaps, or perhaps the faux protest was merely an extension of the ongoing trend of feminist thought that has become so prominent today. Just listen to pop princess Beyoncé’s hit song: “Who run the world? … Girls!” The word FEMINIST even lit up the stage at MTV’s video music awards as the former Destiny’s Child diva belted out her songs.

Even Harry Potter star Emma Watson has declared herself a feminist. The actress, who has recently been named a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, gave an animated speech two weeks ago at the U.N. headquarters in New York, about her plans to launch the “HeForShe” campaign – a campaign that will incorporate both men and women with the goal of getting men onboard to help end women’s inequalities.

Amidst the chants and shouts on the Chanel catwalk, a “HeForShe” banner waved high – a blatant reference to feminism and Watson’s campaign.

Whether or not Lagerfeld was playing off of a “women rule” sort of mindset in his protest, I’d think it’s safe to say that at the very least, his models ruled the runway! Gorgeous women strut their stuff down the catwalk in Lagerfeld’s relaxed, masculine-like suits that revealed just enough woman underneath! The year was 2015, and Karl’s Girls that day, Ruled the World! There was black and white with hints of gold, shine, frill, and most importantly, attitude!
