Oversized coats seem to be the talk of the town. Bold powerful shoulders that remind me of the days of the 80’s. Bigger is better in winter coats this fall. Coat have gigantic sleeves, wide shoulders, and fullness overall. In the 1830’s continuing into the 1900s fullness was being added to clothing to give one a broader fuller appearance.

We have not given up on the idea of fullness just yet; it is back in high fashion demand. Designers offering larger than life coats this fall are Stella McCartney, Peter Piloto, Richard Nicoll, Max Mara, Juun J, Alexander Wang, Carven, Dries Van Noten, Christopher Cane, Proenza Schouler, Helmet Lang, Top Shop, Marni and dozens more.

Max Mara has taken it to the MAX during his Fall 2013 collection. Coats, Jackets, and Vest were enormous and made the models look like beautiful giants from another world. A lot of monochromatic neutral colors and layers of camel, alpaca, shearling paired with drapey pants seemed larger than life together. These models were definitely not cold and in everyday life all these pieces would not be worn together.

It did do the trick on the runway though and there were plenty of amazing pieces to work with in your daily wear. The hair was simple and the eye makeup on the models was flawless. The upper lids swiped with a neutral and the lower lid with a pop color set the mood.

Ms. McCartney’s show was very women’s sexy business world meets a mans world. Cute little black and white dresses, pin striped skirts, oversized coats, pin striped jackets, peplum tops, gigantic dresses all clicked down the wooden runway. A few pieces struck me a little out of place. Track suits, caps and white clogs seemed like a last minute add on. None the less it had some great pieces you could work with. Backstage Stella spoke about her collection saying she was “inserting the feminine into masculine”.

This masculine sculptural oversized trend is not an easy trend to pull off. It can be done and it is a very fun trend. This look must be paired with a slimmer silhouette. Example: bold oversized coat paired with a pencil skirt or slim fittingtrouser. Wherever the fullness is the opposite must be narrower or you will look like a hot mess or be mistaken for homeless.

So trend carefully with this larger than life look and have a blast. You only live big once!
